Maintaining Healthy Hair: Effective Showering and Care Tips to Prevent Damage and Hair Loss

  1. Don’t go to bed with wet hair. Shower during the day so that your hair is going to be dry well before bedtime where it’s likely to be damaged if you go to bed with wet hair
  2. Brush your hair to remove all tangles before showering. Brush in sections from bottom to top to reduce breakage while brushing. Always brush hair when dry – never wet.
  3. Wet your hair and apply two treatments of shampoo appropriate to your hair type – preferably with low pH and sulfate-free such as Anti-thinning Biotin Shampoo. Wash while gently massaging, rinse in the direction of natural growth, and repeat until hair feels smooth and product-free. If hair still feels rough after multiple applications, you may have hard water or residual hair product buildup.
  4. Don’t skip the conditioner. I avoided conditioner for many years thinking it would weigh down my thin hair. Over time, I realized my mistake and learned that conditioner is necessary to moisturize the scalp. Don’t skip this step, but rather find a conditioner that is best suited to your hair type. You can add back in volume with your styling products.
  5. Hot water can hurt your hair by causing the hair shaft to expand and strip the natural oils from your hair which can cause it to become dry, brittle, and more prone to breakage. While the rest of your shower may have been with warm or even hot water, be sure to finish with first warm and then a cool-water rinse to seal your cuticles, increase shine, and reduce hair loss.
  6. Squeeze, don’t rub. When done gently squeeze water out of your hair and use a microfiber towel to dry your hair gently. Microfiber absorbs moisture better than terry cloth, cotton, or bamboo. Do not rub. Rather, loosely wrap hair in a head wrap and let hair dry to a damp stage while finishing your morning routine. The goal is to have damp but not wet hair before you start to style.
